With a wide spectrum of Academic Programs, Kennebec Neighbors Adult Education is sure to have learning for everyone. Each program is built with community in mind. Our programs are engaging and we provide an accepting and safe environment. Our Academics focuses on the individual. We offer open enrollment, flexible scheduling and individualized instruction. Our teaching team and administrative staff are here to help you each step of the way. To become an Adult Education Learner you must complete the onboarding process. Give us a call and we will schedule you to come in for the initial assessments and intake paperwork.
High School Completion Options | Available Online, in Gardiner, in Winthrop
Opt 1 - HiSET® | High School Equivalency
The HiSET® is an equivalency diploma that replaces the GED program. This diploma can be earned by passing five exams in the areas of Writing, Social Studies, Science, Reading and Math. This is a no-cost program in Maine. You must be 16 years of age to enroll and cannot take the official exams until the age of 17. HiSET® students must complete the following:
- Complete Math and Reading assessments at entry and exit of program.
- Attend morning or evening in-preparation classes twice a week.
- Complete the HiSET® official practice tests at “prepared” level to take the official tests.
- Participate in career and college planning.
- Pass all five HiSET® tests.
Opt 2 - High School Diploma (Limited Opt.)
If you have just a few credits needed to complete your High School Diploma we may be able to help! With your up-to-date transcripts, we will review our diploma requirements and discuss options. This is a no-cost program. Diploma classes are arranged as needed and may use online software (Edmentum Coursework) when appropriate. Individualized courses in English, Algebra & Geometry, Health and Life and Work are Available.

College and Career Exploration
We offer classes for college preparation, as well as academic preparation to get you ready for college. And once you’re there, we can offer continued academic support to help you make the best of your college experience. Our Reading & Writing for College and Number Skills for College classes will help you learn to write a college-level research paper and boost your Accuplacer skills, if the college you’re applying to requires the Accuplacer.
Free Community College (3cr)
We are able to offer one free community college course for people who enroll in our program. Get familiar with college with the help of our staff.
Additional Academic Supports
AE College Navigators
Across the state there are Adult Education College Navigators positioned at each of the community colleges. They will help with enrolling and support throughout the program.
AE Career Navigators
Our hub has a Career Navigator to help get people connected to career opportunities including jobs, apprenticeships and internships. There are five across the state available to students.
Free College for 20-23 Grads
Whether you complete high school traditionally or earn an equivalency diploma, recent graduates are able to attend a Maine Community College for Free!
